This episode is one of the most interesting, for there is no real through-and-through villain. With Mr. Henning the stereotype of an American is shown, who wants to buy British History like "chocolade or coffee" and who is not interested in how he gets it. He hasn't scruples to take it from a naiv farmer-family. Only Granddad see through the thoughts of Mr. Henning and goes firmly in his way, and nerves him quite a lost. Also Junior has tipically American characteristics (e.g. bad education) which the Five try to pull out (George's breakfast-szene is the funniest one in the whole Famous Five). With an excellent atmosphere (especially in the book) Enid Blyton shows up how historic values and culture are destroyed. |
