The Enid Blyton Story
"Five Have A Mystery To Solve"
A Children's Film Foundation Production
Publicity Notes
The location for this story required a coastline with a low
wooded island, without visible signs of habitation, just off-shore
and this proved surprisingly difficult to find. Even the west coast
of Ireland had been considered when someone auggssted Looe, in
Cornwall, and this proved to be the ideal spot, with the mystery
island just as it is described in the book written by Enid Blyton.
The location shooting was done during late October and early
November 1963 and although the children had to spend quite a time
in and out of the cold sea, they survived remarkably well and took
even heavy seas in good part.
In fact, a great part of the film required the characters to
wade around in water. During the studio shooting, the children and
one of the adult actors - Keith Pyott - spent two days in a dungeon
set with cold water gradually rising to their shoulders. Needless
to aay, in between all this rather uncomfortable shooting the children
were wrapped in blankets and given lots of hot drinks, but at the
end of the ahooting everyone was so impreseed with the good natured
way in which they had taken their difficult conditions that the unit
gave each of them a present. The older children chose the current Beatles
recard and the youngest boy - Darryl - chose an archery set with
which he proceeded to menace the entire Studio.
The dungeon set, which was a large tank holding 1500 gallons
of water, took up the major part of the studio floor. At the end
of the scenes the local Fire Brigade pumped the water out, which
took them 4½ hours.
The animals used in the film were all experienced actors, especially
the dog Tuck, one of the 'Five'. The Props Department had an unusual
task at one atage - that of painting strips on to rabbits to make them
look like a rare breed. Amongst the invoices received for this production
was one for the hire of 1 toad, 6 spiders and 12 snails.
The children were from the Corona School. Michael Wennink, who
played Wilfred, had just finished playing in 'Oliver' and has since
played the leading part of Martin in 'Martin's Eye' a Menotti opera
performed for the first time at the Bath Festival. David Palmer,
Paula Boyd and Darryl Read are all busy on various B.B.C. commitments
and Amanda Coxall, who has played in numerous C.F.F. films, has just
finished filming "Every Day is a Holiday."

"was bereits geschah".
Anmerkungen
- George sehr weiblich, auch in der Kleidung
